The AT&T 2nd Avenue Rebuild project at 185 2nd Ave N in Nashville, TN, took place from 2021 to 2022. This project involved the complete restoration of a mid-20th-century structure severely damaged in the Christmas morning 2020 bombing. The building’s exterior was entirely reconstructed to give it a more contemporary appearance while incorporating a unique historical homage. The project included the fabrication and installation of perforated ACM panels, with 1,341 panels totaling 88,072 TNSF. The perforated panels featured 923,880 perforated holes, creating a visually impactful design.
The design for the new façade was inspired by a watercolor artwork created by local artist Phil Ponder, who also painted the Victorian facades across the street. The art piece was digitized and converted into a full-size half-tone image, spanning three stories high and over 250 feet long. This “ghost image” serves as a tribute to the lost history of the buildings that once occupied the site, reflecting the historical significance of the area while embracing a modern aesthetic.
In addition to the perforated panels, we also fabricated and installed metal plates and louvers to complete the new exterior. This project beautifully blended contemporary design with a deep sense of place, evoking reflection on the past, present, and future of Nashville’s iconic 2nd Avenue.
