Architectural High Definition 3D Scanning

GETTING THE JOB DONE RIGHT…THE FIRST TIME

With our versatile product line, many of our projects contain complex designs and details. As with any project, from the simple to the most intricate, accuracy in site measurements and details are imperative. John W. McDougall Company has greatly increased our accuracy and efficiency by implementing a state-of-the-art High Definition Scanner (HDS) into our field dimensioning and engineering process.

Utilizing the Leica Geosystems ScanStation and Cyclone technology, our engineering team can quickly make extremely detailed and precise 3D models of structures onsite from several vantage points, capturing up to 50,000 points per second. These dense “point clouds” make up the 3D models which are then imported into our drafting software.

Benefits McDougall offers by using High Definition Scanning technology:

  • Accuracy – With a single measurement distance accuracy of up to 4mm the scanner allows our engineering team to see the structure at any angle, down to the most intricate details.
  • Time – Because the scanner operator can customize the scan in the field, we get the job done quickly and correctly the first time.
  • Safety – With a maximum distance range of 300m and a full field-of-view feature, the scanner allows the capture of data overhead, vertical, horizontal and sub-level from safe and optimal distances / locations.

One of the biggest reasons our scanning process saves so much time and money is due to as-built accuracy. We have never been on a jobsite where the architect’s drawings and the as-built structure were 100% in line with each other. Whether it’s an onsite miscalculation or a window that had to be nudged over a bit, there are always inaccuracies between the drawings and built structure no matter how small. These changes cause wasted time in remakes, sometimes simple and other times complex, which in turn cost you money. But when our team goes onsite, scans the as-built structure, brings back the data and we use to it draw and fabricate out panel systems, there are no surprises when it’s time to install. On schedule quality wall panel systems are the result.

We have seen a much larger request for this service and technology over the past few years. With so many businesses struggling financially recently, many of them have opted to retrofit and remodel as opposed to new construction. Also, the improved technology has made the process so quick and a huge boost to saving time and money on building projects.

Our architectural division is diverse in both its products and services. Our other division also has a strong resume in various industries served. As a custom sheet metal fabrication shop, our Industrial Metals division can fabricate to your precise specifications.
