David L. Lawrence Convention Center

Pittsburgh, PA

Originally built in in 1981, the facility became part of the city’s renewal plan in 1999 and was slated for a major redesign and rebuild. Rafael Viñoly Architects set out to design the new massive 1,500,000 square foot facility to be a “green” building and at its reopening in 2003 that goal was realized as it became the first convention center in North America to received LEED certification as well as the largest “green” building in the world. The following year the building was awarded the Supreme Award for structural engineering excellence from the Institution of Structural Engineers.
